GAME WEEK ( South Dakota ) – FIRST ‘GAME WEEK’ DEPTH CHART RELEASED – Five True Freshman Earn Spots While Some Positions Remain Unclear

It’s always an interesting and exciting element to the new college football season.

On Monday, as the preseason No. 3 ranked Oregon Ducks prepare for their opener Saturday in Autzen Stadium, head coach Mark Helfrich released his long awaited depth chart in preparation for the Coyotes of South Dakota.

While some position battles remain unsettled, ( TE, RB and RG ) the sizzling news on this years opening depth chart is the announcement that five true freshman have made the list and should see considerable action in 2014.

While most expected Royce Freeman to make the cut at running back, it wasn’t so clear at other positions.

Making the depth chart are WR Charles Nelson who will back up Keanon Lowe, Tyrell Crosby at right tackle who backs up Andre Yruretagoyena, kicker Aiden Schnieder who will back up Matt Wogan and Tanner Carew who is scheduled to start at long snapper.

Oregon running backs coach Gary Campbell must think he’s been given a wealth of riches having the opportunity to coach what’s been described as a three-headed monster in the Ducks backfield, including Freeman who’s been heaped with mountains of praise since arriving in Eugene.

“I think he is going to be a really, really special guy” explained Campbell when asked about his prized freshman back.

While the wide receiver, running back and offensive line positions seem to have a clear and distinct pecking order, the positions of tight end and right guard may not.

Even at running back with Freeman’s many accolades, Campbell see’s it as a stalemate to this point describing the competition as a ‘three-way tie.’

At tight end, it’s not much clearer with Pharaoh Brown, Johnny Mundt and Evan Baylis all in the mix to start.

On the offensive line, specifically at right guard, Jake Piscarcik is pushing sophomore Cameron Hunt who redshirted last year.

At each of these positions the depth chart includes the small word of ‘Or’ when listing the players names meaning at this point the starters have not yet been decided.

Although with Oregon and its football philosophy, being named the starter doesn’t carry much weight other than the prestige of having ones name shown on DuckVision when the starters are announced at the beginning of each home game.

What’s worked for the Ducks in the recent past and present is the coaches strategy of creating depth through hundreds, if not thousands of practice repetitions giving every player the opportunity to play.

The Ducks open the 2014 season on Saturday August 30th against South Dakota in Autzen Stadium.
