FALL CAMP 2014 – THREE WEEKS INTO FALL CAMP, DON PELLUM LIKES WHAT HE SEE’S FROM HIS DEFENSE – “Overall We’re On Pace of Where We’d Like to Be”

It’s hard to believe the pre-season ranked ( No. 3 ) Oregon Ducks are nearly through week No. 3 of fall camp which also means the 2014 season opener is right around the corner.

No one knows that more than new defensive coordinator Don Pellum.

“Right now I don’t feel any jitters” said Pellum Tuesday when asked about his level of nerves leading into the August 30th opener.

“What I feel is we need two more weeks of camp….that’s what I’m feeling.   The kids are doing great.  Everything is coming together.  It’s coming fast,…we’re going to look up and it’s going to be Thursday before the game.”

Although the team messages out of fall practice remain cryptic from coaches and players so as not to provide to much inside information to the media, Pellum continues to give a ‘thumbs up’ to his defense 15 days into camp.

“Overall I think we’re on pace to where we’d like to be” explained Pellum after Tuesday’s workout.

“I think the front’s doing well,…the rotation of guys has been good and we’re starting to get in shape,…and that’s nice.  I’m starting to see guys really run and now you got players running down the field 20-30 yards chasing the ball the way they’re supposed to.”

In 2013 the Ducks were both 4th in scoring defense ( allowing 25.8 ppg ) and total defense allowing 3,618 total yards ( 402 ypg ).

Pretty much coach-speak to me. The games will tell us. I think we have real ability on defense everywhere, but a little bit short on starting experience here and there, which hopefully won’t be a big deal.

Of course . . . as Moseley has been identifying his practice updates this year, this is “Preseason camp,” not fall camp (the camp starts and ends in the warmest summer month of the year) — even though old habits die hard, as some of the coaches and players continue to call it that. And it’s also probably more accurate to say that the Ducks are in the FINAL week of Preseason camp, since next week (and possibly beginning at the end of this week) is simply game-prep week, like each week before a game will be.

Thanks for notes and observations. We’ve always called it ‘fall camp’ because as you know in college football there’s no pre-season,…like there is in the NFL. Every game counts which is what makes college football so exciting. Keep reading and commenting.
