On Sunday morning at the Valero Alamo Bowl head coaches press conference, those attending probably thought they were actually at a comedy club instead of an important sports media event.
Watching Texas coach Mack Brown and Oregon coach Mark Helfrich, and the chemistry between them, you’d think they’d been working on their traveling act for years.
“I like to get a little anger going before the game” quipped Helfrich in his opening statement regarding his new found friendship with Brown.
“When you’re around him, it’s just more impressive, more classy, you know,…just better than the high expectations that I had coming into this deal.”
In their nearly 30 minute question and answer period with a room full of television, print and on-line reporters, Brown and Helfrich drew laughs a number of times with their interaction between each other.
At one point, Helfrich was asked about the Ducks reclaiming their mojo after the extended break between the Oregon State game and the bowl game.
“Part of that is realizing that the guys in the helmets are the guys that make it happen and earn it” explained Helfrich.
“Like I said the other day, they don’t give us points because the ‘O’ shows up,…and we step on the field and we get 27 points on the board,…Can we do that by the way,…28 maybe” Helfrich asked Brown with a smile?
Without hesitation, Brown answered,…”I’ve been seeing 65 from you guys.”
It was that kind of spirited and comical interaction during the entire press briefing.
