Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich entered the Valero Alamo Bowl press room all smiles after the Ducks ran away from the home favorite Texas Longhorns 30-7 Monday night in the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.
And why shouldn’t he smile.
His No. 10 Oregon Ducks sent retiring defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti out with a win in which the defense held hold the Longhorns to just 7 points and 180 rushing yards.
He also saw his star quarterback [ Marcus Mariota ] set a new Alamo Bowl rushing record by a quarterback with 133 yards, in addition to seeing his senior wide receiver, Josh Huff, set a single season [ school ] record for receiving yards with 1,140 while also tying the single season record for touchdown receptions with 12.
All in all a pretty good night for the first year head coach who notched his 11th win and first bowl victory of his young career.
“That’s for you to decide” answered Helfrich when asked to judge his first year as a head coach.
“I don’t think in those terms. I think about how well we can prepare these guys and what’s next. We’re going to celebrate tonight with a Diet Pepsi, Gatorade, Propel Zero, enjoy it,…then we’ll get back to recruiting, get back to our winter phase of conditioning,…and hammer out this next phase.”
