One of the best parts of covering the No. 2 Oregon Ducks is by far waiting to hear what defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti will say next.
He’s a reporters dream.
When you’re waiting for the perfect quote, Aliotti always delivers.
Last week, during the Ducks practice preparations for the Cougars, Aliotti used one of his post practice press briefings to call out the Pac-12 officials saying publicly they were ‘horrible’ in the way they call PI’s ( Pass interference ) and ‘they don’t understand the game.’
On Saturday night, Aliotti was at it again.
But this time, his Italian temper was pointed directly at WSU second year head coach Mike Leach.
In his post game press conference, Aliotti scolded Leach for leaving his first team offense in the game when it was clearly out of reach late in the 4th quarter.
“I’m pissed off they scored those last two touchdowns” said Aliotti after the game.
“I know you can’t print ( pissed off ) and I know I’m not a diplomat and I don’t really care if I’m a diplomat,..I really don’t….all I care about is winning games and the kids get better and we play hard…and I thought we did that in the second half,… but that’s total bulls**t that he threw the ball at the end of the game like he did. You can print that,..you can send it to him and he can comment…I think it’s low class and it was bulls**t to throw the ball when the games completely over.”
When the game was clearly out of reach for the Cougars, Leach kept his starting quarterback ( Connor Halliday ) in the game along with their first team offense.
While the Ducks pulled their starters early in the 4th quarter and replaced them with scout team players, Leach continued to throw the ball with Halliday at the helm in what looked to be an obvious opportunity to pad his personal stats.
Halliday ended his record setting night throwing for 557 yards and was 58 of 89 with 4 interceptions.
