Hot off the University of Oregon marketing presses – the No. 4 Oregon Ducks will be wearing white on Saturday against the No. 17 USC Trojans in Los Angeles at Memorial Coliseum.
Why is this big news you ask?
Typically, the Oregon football marketing machine keeps everyone guessing on uniform color and scheme right up until game time. It drives discussions on fan blogs and certainly gives the media another topic to write about.
Not this time. Those in charge at Nike marketing and Oregon football pre-released Saturday’s uniform choice along with the mantra STORM LA to not only heighten the interest of Saturday’s marquee matchup, but to also drive revenue from additional Oregon merchandise.
There’s no doubt, when it comes to marketing know-how, Nike and the University of Oregon are in the category of genius.
Nike is calling Saturday’s uniforms “White Vapor.” According to Nike, they’re the lightest, fastest uniforms they’ve ever made. They’re nearly entirely white. The helmet is white with metallic silver wings, the pants are entirely white, and the shirts are white with the exception of the copper numbers.
Knowing Saturday’s matchup between the undefeated Ducks ( 8-0 / 5-0 ) and the Trojans ( 6-2 / 4-2 ) would be the biggest game of the year so far for Oregon, executives chose to release this marketing extravanza to coincide with the visit to Los Angeles.
